I personally am still up in the air about the whole IRB requirement. It's certainly been a pain in my ass in terms of constant paperwork and the weirdness of having to have the people I work with sign forms for me, but I wonder whether having an IRB by/for ethnographers (separate from the medical/psychological stuff) might not take care of some of the annoying parts while maintaining a minimal accountability in the ethical department.
